Heart disease and cancer are the number one and number two killers in America — we’re on a mission to change that.

According to the CDC1, heart disease and cancer are responsible for close to 1.3 million deaths in the US each year. Smart Scan seeks to change that by making early detection accessible for all.

Meet the physicians who make Smart Scan possible.

Your care is in good hands.

Gary M. Goldstein, MD

Writes the order

Board certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and additionally in pediatrics and geriatric medicine. Hahnemann University, 1985, residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Vanderbilt, and four decades in practice in the Tampa Bay area. He reviews every intake and issues the order for the exam — which is why no referral from your own physician is required, and why an exam judged inappropriate is refunded rather than performed.

Gerald E. Grubbs, MD

Reads the images

Board certified in both diagnostic radiology and vascular and interventional radiology. University of Tennessee College of Medicine, 1989, residency in diagnostic radiology and neuroradiology at Tennessee, fellowship at the Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute, and more than three decades reading cross-sectional imaging in Florida. Every Smart Scan study is read by a board-certified radiologist, and the reports go to you and to your own physician.

Nghia Ho, MD

Research and clinical informatics

A decade of work in medical informatics and clinical information research, and Executive Technical Medical Director of the Eddie DeBartolo International Cardio-Orthopaedics Society. He edited the society’s cardio-orthopaedics materials alongside Eric E. Harrison, MD, and holds adjunct teaching appointments at two colleges of pharmacy. His work sits on the research and data side of the program; he does not order or read exams.

Eric E. Harrison, MD

In memoriam

A founding physician of the University of South Florida medical school, for thirteen years co-director of the Cardiology Center at Tampa General Hospital, and the cardiologist who shaped how Smart Scan reports a calcium score. He directed noninvasive cardiology at Tampa General for seven years and began its echocardiography and nuclear cardiology programs; with his associates he originated the paramedic services of Tampa Fire Rescue and Hillsborough County, serving as medical director of each for many years. He co-founded the International Cardio-Oncology Society. He died in November 2025.

The score that carries his name

A message from our founder, David Giorgione.

David Giorgione Sr.Founder

I started Smart Scan in Tampa in 2017 on a simple premise: an exam this useful should be made available to as many people as possible, for the lowest possible price — with no referral, no negotiation, and the price printed where anyone can see it.

Everything about how we work follows from that. We hold direct relationships with prescribing physicians, imaging centers, and board-certified radiologists, and the $798 covers everything — the order, the scan, the radiologist’s report and the coronary calcium score. Nobody here works on commission.

We cannot promise anyone a longer life. We can help make sure nobody loses one to something that was visible the whole time.

David Giorgione Sr.Founder, Smart Scan

Why it costs $798.

Quick scan time
Smart Scan takes less than a minute while other scans can take up to an hour, allowing our centers to handle more patients.
Dedicated physicians
We work directly with prescribing physicians, so you don’t have to pay out of pocket for a separate appointment.
Efficiency at scale
By booking appointments at scale, we’re able to better utilise expensive, high-end equipment and pass the savings on to you.

The $798 covers the physician order, the scan, the board-certified radiologist’s report on the whole body, and the coronary calcium score. Everything is included.
