Smart Scan

Introducing the world’s greatest coronary calcium score.

The Harrison Unified Coronary Calcium Score measures the size, density, position, and risk of fracture for each individual plaque in your coronary arteries. Only at Smart Scan.

The Agatston Coronary Calcium Score.

In addition to the Harrison Unified Coronary Calcium Score, every Smart Scan includes the Agatston score — a long-time industry standard that measures the size and density of plaque in each coronary artery and calculates your total.

Easy to read results.

The Agatston ranges are standardized and backed by decades of clinical research. They take in all of the coronary arteries and the calcification in each of them, and place the total in a risk range.

See where you stand.

Your calcium score gets plotted on a chart that compares you with other people your same age and gender. If you land in the 75th percentile, that means 75% of people like you have a lower score than yours.

What is a coronary calcium score?

Plaque can build in your heart’s arteries for decades without a single symptom. Over time that plaque calcifies, creating bright highlights on CT images. Coronary calcium scoring measures those highlights and assigns a risk classification based on the extent of calcification.

It’s one of the most rigorously studied metrics in preventive cardiology. In March 2026 the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) raised it to a Class 1 recommendation — their strongest — for adults at borderline or intermediate cardiovascular risk.

Coronary calcium scoring can only be performed on specialized CT scanners — an MRI cannot score it at all. At Smart Scan, your heart is imaged as part of your full-body CT, and both your Agatston and Harrison reports are included at no extra cost.

In addition to the Agatston CCS, Smart Scan has added the Harrison Unified Coronary Calcium Score. Where the Agatston score totals the calcium, the Harrison score goes deeper — scoring each individual plaque by its position, its size, its density in Hounsfield units, and the risk of that plaque fracturing.

  • Position — which artery, and where along it
  • Size and density of each plaque
  • Risk of fracture, plaque by plaque

In Memoriam

Dr. Eric E. Harrison, M.D.

The late Dr. Eric E. Harrison, Smart Scan’s Medical Director.

Dr. Eric Harrison’s career was a labor of love in service of others. He was a founding physician of the University of South Florida’s medical school. For thirteen years he co-directed the Cardiology Center at Tampa General Hospital, where he led noninvasive cardiology and started its echocardiography and nuclear cardiology programs. In 2009, he co-founded the International Cardio-Oncology Society. He also had a passion for writing children’s books.

During his tenure as Smart Scan’s lead cardiologist, he worked closely with Dr. Nghia Ho to develop a new protocol to better classify cardiac risk through non-invasive imaging. In 2025, their hard work culminated in the Harrison Unified Coronary Calcium Score.

He passed peacefully in November 2025. His impact will live on forever.
